1892: Grenfell Mission

British medical missionary Wilfred Grenfell arrived at Labrador in 1892 to investigate living conditions among local fishermen.

1832: Grosse Ile Quarantine Station

Grosse Ile is located in the middle of the St. Lawrence River and for many years it was the main point of entry for immigrants coming to Canada.

1866: Sanitary reformers

The threat of cholera in 1866-67 exacerbated long-standing tensions within the medical profession between the curative and preventive approaches to managing the disease.

1890: Myra Bennett

Nurse Myra Bennett was dubbed ‘The Florence Nightingale of Newfoundland’ for the medical assistance she provided along an isolated stretch of Newfoundland coast.
