The History e-book

This is Public Health: A Canadian History is a downloadable e-book. Richly illustrated and interactive, this history explores public health from the time before Canada was a nation until 1986.

From Austria to AlbertaKnowing one’s history is important in informing the present and the future. A century ago, as today, the face of Canada was changing and public health was at the forefront doing good work. During the centenary year, we will explore our public health past not only through this website but through a history book on public health that is now being written, and through a history exhibit that will be unveiled at the centenary conference in June.

Dr. John Hastings, who had a long and distinguished career in public health, provided an overview of public health history in Canada in a speech he gave in 1999 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Ontario Public Health Association. Dr. Cordell Neudorf, who today is the Chair of CPHA’s Board of Directors, picked up where Dr. Hastings left off, giving us a view of public health over that last decade.
