Martha Aldrich
A Distinguished Nursing Career and Service in the North
Martha Aldrich was born in the United States and raised in Quebec. She graduated from the Sherbrooke Hospital School of Nursing in 1951 and has diplomas in nursing from McGill University (1953), the University of Toronto (1966) and the University of Alberta (1974). Ms. Aldrich taught nursing at her own training school in Sherbrooke, Quebec and served with the Grenfell Mission at St. Anthony, Newfoundland before entering the public health field. She has served nearly 20 years with the Medical Services Branch of Health and Welfare Canada and worked in the Northwest Territories as Nurse-in-Charge of the nursing stations at Tuktoyaktuk, Coppermine and Pangnirtung, and at the Health Centre at Rae-Edzo. Martha Aldrich became a trusted friend of the native people in the communities where she worked and her long and devoted service to the people of the north is deserving of the highest recognition. Martha Aldrich was awarded CPHA’s Honorary Life Membership in 1982. (CPHA Health Digest, Vol. 6, No. 2, April 1982)
