Public Health Education and Practice in Nova Scotia

Dr. Charles J.W. Beckwith was born in Halifax and earned the degrees of BA, MD and CM from Dalhousie University and a Diploma in Public Health from the University of Toronto. Dr. Beckwith was the first full-time Director of the Cape Breton Health Unit in 1937 and was later appointed Medical Director of the Halifax Tuberculosis Hospital and Director of Tuberculosis Control for the Halifax Department of Health. In 1952, he became chairman of a committee administering the Department of Medicine, carried on the teaching of medical students, and was Medical Consultant in Tuberculosis for the Halifax Children’s Hospital. Dr. Beckwith was appointed the first full-time Executive Secretary of the Medical Society of Nova Scotia in 1956 and guided this organization most ably until his retirement in 1968. Dr. Beckwith was President of the Nova Scotia Tuberculosis Association from 1947 to 1951 and held an appointment with the Cape Breton Highlanders Reserve Unit. Dr. Charles J.W. Beckwith was awarded CPHA’s Honorary Life Membership in 1969.
