Helen Preston Glass
Distinguished Educator, Researcher and Leader in Canadian Health Care
Dr. Helen Preston Glass received a diploma in nursing from the Royal Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in Montreal in 1939, and a doctoral degree from Columbia University, New York in 1971. She worked tirelessly to advance public health and knowledge locally, nationally and internationally and was actively involved with the Canada Health Act and health care reform. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including honorary doctorate degrees from five Canadian universities, the Jeanne Mance Award, the Mary Tolle Wright Leadership Founders’ Award, Officer of the Order of Canada, Member of the Order of the Buffalo Hunt (Manitoba), and Professor Emerita at the University of Manitoba School of Nursing. She chaired Manitoba’s Advisory Committee on Community Nurse Resource Centres and was the liaison between the Manitoba Minister of Health’s Steering Committee Health Advisory Network, and the Primary Care Committee and the Ambulatory Care of Alternative Health Services Task Force Committee. Dr. Helen Preston Glass was awarded CPHA’s Honorary Life Membership in 1995.
